Role Overview & Responsibilities

The role

The Mu3e experiment, under preparation at PSI, will look for beyond-the-standard model physics in lepton flavour-violating decays of the muon. The University of Bristol, along with Liverpool and Oxford, are building the outer pixel layers, which consist of monolithic HV-CMOS detectors on a novel low-mass structure. The experiment should be installed and ready for first data in 2024, and has the potential to improve current limits on the process by four orders of magnitude. The Bristol particle physics group have a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher to play a leading role in all of our Mu3e activities.

What will you be doing?

You will prepare for the first Mu3e physics data, developing and improving algorithms to search for lepton flavour violation and other new physics signatures. You will then take a leading role in the first data analysis and scientific publications from the experiment. You will contribute to the construction, commissioning and operation of the outer pixel layers, spending time at PSI and other partner institutes as necessary.

You should apply if

  • You have a PhD in particle physics (or equivalent)
  • You have experience of data analysis techniques that you wish to apply in a novel experiment with great physics potential
  • You wish to discover physics beyond the standard model.
  • You are enthusiastic about working with the latest particle detection technology (HV-CMOS)
  • You have experience developing particle detectors and/or maintenance and operation of particle physics experiments (or similar)
