Role Overview & Responsibilities

We have an exciting opportunity to support COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) testing at University Hospital Dorset sites (Poole and Royal Bournemouth Hospitals). A couple of laboratory-based methods are currently in operation across both sites within the Microbiology Departments and satellite departments to deliver point of care testing. In-house testing ensures a faster turnaround time to improve patient flow and reduce bottlenecks in both hospitals.

Team members are required to provide the SAMBA testing service that will meet the fluctuating demand. The service runs 24/7 and the shift pattern will therefore include day, night and weekend shifts

The swabs collected from the patient are placed into a tube and delivered to the SAMBA suite. The samples are deactivated within ten minutes of being placed in the tube and are ready for testing. You will be required to operate a number of benchtop units for the process, for which full training and competency sign off will be given. You will also receive training on the LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) to enable data entry of patient details.

Previous applicants need not reapply for this vacancy.

Base Location: Royal Bournemouth Hospital or Poole Hospital

Interview date: TBC

ONE DORSET PATHOLOGY – delivering 21st century Pathology services

The One Dorset Pathology service will bring together Dorset County Hospital, Poole Hospital and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals to deliver a single, efficient and high-quality pathology service. It will provide clinicians, patients and carers with a consistent and high standard of service across the area and maximise efficiency in the use of resources. The new service is a formal collaboration and is included in one of the 29 national pathology networks known as the ‘South 6’ network that includes: Hampshire Hospitals, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Salisbury and Southampton.

A new £25 million state of the art building is being built on the Wessex field site at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and is scheduled to open in 2023. A new pathology computer system linking all the pathology laboratories in the county is now up and running and we have recently completed a major tender across the S6 Network to replace all of the analytical platforms.
